About Emergency Medical Services
Students engage in comprehensive coursework that introduces foundational and advanced competencies in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, patient assessment, trauma and medical emergencies, CPR and basic life support (BLS), airway management, soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, and emergency scene safety. Through hands-on skill labs, scenario-based training, and simulation experiences, students learn to perform critical tasks such as vital sign measurement, splinting, bleeding control, patient lifting and moving, oxygen administration, and communication with healthcare facilities and emergency responders.
A central component of the pathway includes preparation for industry-recognized certifications, such as CPR/First Aid, Basic Life Support (BLS), and the Indiana Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification when available and appropriate based on program hours and local partnerships. Work-based learning opportunities, including clinical rotations or field observations with EMS agencies, fire departments, or hospitals, provide essential exposure to real patient-care environments and professional standards.
The pathway prepares students for entry-level roles such as emergency medical responder, EMT trainee, patient care technician, or healthcare support staff, as well as for continued education in paramedicine, nursing, fire science, or other allied health and public safety fields.
