Parapro Assessment

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) ParaPro assessment was developed in response to the federal legislation known as No Child Left Behind. The law requires paraprofessionals serving in an instructional capacity to:

  • hold an associate of arts degree, or
  • complete two years of college, or
  • demonstrate, through a state or local academic assessment, that they are knowledgeable in reading, writing and math and capable of assisting in classroom instruction

The ParaPro assessment is used by the state of Indiana for prospective and practicing paraprofessionals who do not meet the college experience or degree requirements to document proficiency in reading, writing and math and the ability to apply those skills and knowledge to assist in classroom instruction.

Indiana Qualifying Score
Indiana’s established qualifying score is 460. Test takers must meet or exceed this qualifying score to pass the ParaPro Assessment. Your unofficial scores are available onscreen and can be printed at the end of the test. Your official score report is mailed approximately two weeks after the test date and is automatically reported to the school district that purchased the assessment. A copy of your scores is automatically sent to the state's teacher credentialing office.

Format and Length of the Test
Hinds Career Center offers the assessment in the computer-based format. The 2½-hour assessment consists of 90 multiple-choice questions in the core subject areas of reading, writing and math.

Approximately two-thirds of the questions focus on basic skills and knowledge, while the remaining one-third focus on applying skills in the classroom. See the ParaPro Test at a Glance.

Test Preparation
ETS has developed a study guide and a practice test for test takers to help prepare for the Assessment. The free Test at a Glance and other useful tips are available on the ETS Website. http://www.ets.org/parapro/test_prep/materials/

Prior to testing, you should also review the ParaPro Testing Guidelines and Tips for Taking the ParaPro Assessment.
